When Music Becomes Image

Bio Sanghoon Kang is a Korean artist based in Canada since 2021. A former university professor in art and architecture in Seoul, Korea, and a former director of an art gallery in Paris, France, he began his career as an artist in 2020 in France. He has always had a great passion for music and painting, and especially music would be his life path surrounded by a musical family. But he moved into other fields, discovering that he loves taking complex thoughts that are closely related to each other, and completed his undergraduate study in mechanical engineering, his graduate study in architecture, both in the U.S.A. and architectural history research in France. Finding inspiration for his painting has been in music and architecture, and in 2019, he opened an art gallery in Paris, France in order to create a meeting place for art lovers and also to work closely with artists from all over the world, preparing himself to become a competitive artist. The artwork he has created spans more than twenty years, and the experiences acquired as artist as well as director of an art gallery in France have been incorporated into best practices of his work.
Artist Statement Sanghoon Kang’s art practice is inspired by Goethe’s words, “…architecture is frozen music” and his aim is to demonstrate his belief that architecture must evolve into something that, with its form, satisfies a spiritual thinking and into an artistic as well as cultural container – embracing human life. As he listens to music, he perceives the movement of musical notes and gains a deeper understanding of its inner structure. Music emerges from the interplay of different sounds from various musical instruments, all connected by fundamental musical principles, which give rise to diverse ‘musical images.’ He aims to capture the sounds and movements of music on canvas using geometry, creating a free-form representation as if he were finalizing architectural plans. He believes that architectural concepts can share common ideas with musical composition and hopes that those who appreciate music and art will find inspiration and beauty in his artistic world.
